Fong Rebounds with Double Podium Weekend at Road America
Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing's Bobby Fong returns to the podium and closes ground in the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship / Jun 9, 2026 /
After a difficult weekend at Barber Motorsports Park while battling a shoulder injury, Bobby Fong bounced back at Road America. The Californian returned to the podium with a pair of third-place finishes, closing the gap in the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship and moving to third in the standings.
It was a tough start to the weekend for the Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing rider, who qualified eighth and started both races from the third row of the grid. Despite the grid position, Fong had strong starts all weekend. In Race 1, Fong was fifth after the start and in the thick of the lead group. He dropped to sixth, but battled back to fifth and gained another position before the red flag was drawn around the halfway mark. After the restart, Fong grabbed the holeshot but was shuffled back to third in the early laps and continued to run a strong pace, fighting to the end. It was another trademark Road America finish, with Fong crossing the line just 0.099 seconds from victory in a three-rider dash to the checkered flag.

Race 2 was more of the same. Fong once again found himself battling inside the lead group and remained in contention for the podium throughout the race. In the closing laps, he reeled in teammate JD Beach and made the pass on the final lap, edging him out by a mere 0.011 seconds at the finish line to secure another third-place result. His third podium of the season moved him to third in the standings and within 26 points of the championship leader.
“It was good to get two podiums out of here,” said Fong. “After dealing with my shoulder at Barber a little bit and having a little dry spell, we’ve got some confidence back. And we worked through some stuff with the bike setup with these new tires. I’m looking forward to the Ridge. It’s a little smaller track, so this Yamaha will excel there. We’ve just got to keep our forward momentum and just keep giving it our all each race, each qualifying session, each practice – we’ve just got to keep working.”

Beach showed strength from the start at Road America. He qualified on the front row in third and had a strong pace from the opening laps of both races. In Race 1, he slotted into the runner-up spot and spent much of the race inside the lead group before finishing fifth after the restart. In Race 2, he slotted into second once again after the start and briefly led before settling into third, ultimately finishing fourth after his teammate made the pass on the final lap. He leaves Wisconsin fourth in the championship standings, 33 points from the leader.
As for Mathew Scholtz, it was heartbreak for the Strack Racing Yamaha rider who arrived at Round 3 with a 34-point lead and saw that advantage evaporate after an unlucky weekend. Scholtz qualified seventh and finished sixth in Race 1. He found himself once again battling inside the top six in Race 2 before a technical issue forced him to retire on Lap 8. With plenty of racing ahead, the South African is still in the thick of the hunt, trailing Sean Dylan Kelly by one point.

In Supersport, Strack Racing Yamaha’s Blake Davis had a rollercoaster weekend, but continued to fight through adversity. He qualified eighth, putting him on the third row of the grid. From there, he found himself back in 13th in Race 1, but continued to push, ultimately finishing eighth.
In Race 2, Davis got a much better start in sixth. It was a multi-rider fight, with the 19-year-old from Virginia battling for a top-five result. In the final laps, Davis closed back in on the riders ahead, who were battling for the final podium positions, making for another thrilling finish at Road America. Four riders were separated by a mere 0.113 seconds at the line, with Davis finishing fifth.

Liberty St. Yamaha Racing’s Dominic Doyle continued to make progress in Supersport. He qualified in the top 10 and was seventh on the opening lap of Race 1. The South African kept pushing and in the closing laps, advanced to sixth, where he would finish. Doyle once again started inside the top 10 in Race 2. Although he dropped back to 12th four laps in, Doyle continued to fight and made his way back to 10th to finish the weekend with a pair of top-10 results.

In the Twins Cup, Yamaha BLU CRU Estenson Racing’s Sam Drane took home a pair of top-10 finishes. After qualifying 11th, he had a solid start in sixth despite starting on the fourth row of the grid, ultimately finishing ninth. In Race 2, he found himself ninth on the opening lap and made his way to seventh, crossing the line eighth.
The MotoAmerica Superbike Championship returns to action on June 26-28 at The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington.
