About 200 km north from Senegal's capital of Dakar, on the outskirts of the town of St. Louis near the Mauritanian border, there is a small village of around 300 people. In this village where all the daily work relies on a single river nearby, a simple, compact “Yamaha Clean Water System" using natural filtration methods was completed in 2012. The system's distinctive sky-blue equipment and sanitary water drawing station were installed in the middle of the village. The villagers formed a committee to self-manage the water supply in an orderly way as a community, and have been able to secure a daily supply of fresh, potable water as a result.

The "Junior Yacht School Hayama" is a sailing school for children in the junior age group run by the Public-interest Yamaha Motor Foundation for Sports (YMFS). In addition to practicing sailing in the waters off the town of Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, the children also spend their summer vacation doing various activities outdoors, heading to the waters, fields and hills in the surrounding area for treks in the highlands, rafting and canoeing. With these kinds of unique activities, they experience the wonder, grandeur and fragility of nature, but also how danger and fear play a part in every one of these. From this, they learn self-reliance and self-control, develop their cooperation and leadership skills and stimulate their imaginations as they mature in body and soul through adolescence.

The "Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix" is the global contest held to recognize the best of these YTA-certified mechanics. For its 5th holding in 2012, the contest brought together 28 of the best mechanics from 20 countries that qualified by winning national and regional competitions to compete against each other through their knowledge, technical skills and customer service skills for the title of "World's No. 1 Yamaha Mechanic." When the contest was over, the champions were Mr. Thorsten Brand of Germany in the Sport Model Class and Mr. Le Truong Qui Tu of Vietnam in the Commuter/Business Model Class.

It is a scene of unrestrained recreation, with dynamic riding under clear blue skies in the daytime and relaxing dinners around a campfire at night. In these gatherings, you can sense the same type of American spirit of adventure, fun and close-knit bonds with family and friends that drove the pioneering of the American West over a century ago.

These schools are being opened throughout India and young people, each with their own personal dreams and goals, make the daily trip to learn each day. We visited a young man in his late teens learning the skills of a mechanic at the YTS in the southeastern city of Chennai. He studies with fervor and purpose; he wants to work as a professional mechanic so that he can help send his younger brother to school, and also buy a house so his parents can live at ease.

Yamaha Motor made its first steps into Africa with its business in the 1960s. Spearheading the company’s efforts on the continent is the Overseas Market Development Operations (OMDO) Business Unit. The men and women in OMDO have long been heading out into the field themselves, discovering various societal issues and working to devise solutions for them. One program in motion today is to donate 10,000 soccer balls to children in countries across Africa over a decade-long period, and the next batch of shiny new balls were recently delivered to a sports club in Cote d’Ivoire in West Africa.
