Pro Road Racing July 17-19, 2015 | Monterey, California Results

Yamaha YZF-R1 mounted Josh Hayes and YZF-R6 mounted Jake Lewis soared to dramatic wins in their respective AMA Pro SuperBike and Daytona SportBike classes at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. on Sunday, July 13. Hayes’ victory was his fourth in a row and fifth this season, and puts him a full 40 points ahead of teammate Cameron Beaubier in the 2014 AMA Pro SuperBike championship. Meanwhile Beaubier rode a strong race to finish second, and takes over second place in points from rival Roger Hayden with just two events left to go.

The ongoing SuperBike rivalry between Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammates Hayes and Beaubier began on Saturday, with Beaubier taking the pole and setting the quickest time ever for an R1 at the track, with Hayes 0.42 seconds behind. The sparring then continued on Sunday as Hayes and Beaubier went 1-2 in morning warm-up, setting the stage for a showdown in the race. When the 23-lap AMA Pro SuperBike final started, Hayes pinned it and led flag to flag in his trademark dominating style. In contrast Beaubier, just inside the top five at the start, had to fight his way forward. But the SuperBike-class rookie did so quickly, advancing into second after five laps and then chasing Hayes until the race was red-flagged and called complete after 19 laps of competition.

Held earlier in the afternoon, the Daytona SportBike contest proved equally spirited, with Yamaha’s Lewis taking the win over Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha’s JD Beach. RoadRace Factory/Yamaha’s Jake Gagne followed up in fourth, with Yamalube/Westby Racing’s Dane Westby fifth and Beach’s teammate Garrett Gerloff in sixth. Lewis stood out though, leading all 20 laps and setting the fastest race lap along the way. Beach likewise did a good job, jumping into second on lap two and then owning that position for the rest of the race, giving Yamaha another sweep. “Finishing 1-2 in both classes is a great result, and it’s especially nice to do it here on the World Superbike stage,” said Yamaha road-race team manager Tom Halverson. “Congratulations to the entire Yamaha team, and particularly to Jake Lewis for his first Daytona SportBike win.”
