AMA Road Racing July 12 - 14, 2013 | Lexington, OH Results

Monster Graves Yamaha YZF-R1 rider Josh Hayes enjoyed a perfect weekend of racing at Road America in Wisconsin, winning the pole and both AMA Superbike races in dominating fashion on June 2-3. Hayes’ first “double” of the year increases his championship points lead over Blake Young to 20 points after five of 11 rounds in the series. And for the second consecutive weekend, Hayes’ rookie Superbike teammate Josh Herrin put in an outstanding pair of rides, finishing third on the podium both times.

Just as has been the case at every AMA Superbike race this year, qualifying belonged to Hayes and his R1. He was fastest in both qualifying sessions to take the pole position – and more importantly earn the extra championship point that goes with it. Herrin followed up third quickest behind Young. So fast was Hayes’ qualifying effort, that he also beat the Superbike track record – no mean feat considering the years of high-level racing the class has seen at Road America. As dominating as Hayes’ pole run proved to be, it was nothing compared to his race performance. In Saturday’s race one, he showed his heels to the entire field, leading all 10 laps and finishing a dominating 11.349 sec. ahead of Young, with Herrin in turn finishing 7.2 sec. behind Young.

On Sunday, Hayes repeated the performance exactly, jumping to an early lead and then checking out to amass a 13.906 sec. advantage over Young – and incredibly, lowering the track record again. Herrin also took the battle to Young all race long, with the pair swapping second place numerous times over 13 laps. Herrin actually held the advantage for most of the race, until finally ceding the runner-up position with three laps remaining. Nonetheless, he held on tight, following his rival to the checkered flag by just 0.039 sec. “It was a proud moment for the team when Josh Hayes qualified on the pole for the fifth consecutive time, breaking the longstanding track record in the process – and then lowering it again in race two,” said team manager Tom Halverson. “Sunday was also big for Josh Herrin – fighting for second for all 13 laps shows his talent and fitness, and that his maturation process in Superbike is happening really fast.”
