The Nelson Report
Round 2 - 3/30/14
Perris Raceway
Perris, CA

Round 2 of the 2014 Yamaha Quad X marked the series’ first ever visit to Perris Raceway, a legendary So Cal MX track that originally opened in the 1950’s. The track layout was pretty short (fastest lap times in the low 1:20’s) and tight, with a few technical jump sections. Perris Raceway has arguably the best dirt of any track in So Cal. Great traction along with the technical rhythm sections made for some fun but challenging motos.

Moto 1: I had a good jump off the concrete gate and my YFZ450R pulled hard to get me the first moto holeshot ahead of Tanner Gemperle. Gemperle pushed hard from the beginning, showing me the nose of his YFZ-R twice before we finished lap one. Out front I tried to ride clean, fast laps and build a gap. The Pro Am class started behind us at this round on a second gate and with the short lap times we were quickly into traffic. The speed difference and groups of riders battling for position made my race out front much more exciting as after lap 4 I had to pick my way through lapped traffic for the rest of the 12-lap moto to take the win.

Moto 2: My #94 YFZ-R ripped off the start and gave me a huge second moto holeshot to grab the GYTR/Yamalube $250 holeshot award. Gemperle again made a strong effort to get by in lap one but by lap two I had started stretching my lead. There were two technical jump sections that I was getting through better than anyone today and I used them to my advantage lap after lap to make big gains on the competition. Lapped traffic was again the biggest challenge of the race as the Pro Ams struggled with certain sections of the track and the fitness it takes to ride a technically challenging track like Perris. I kept a strong pace out front all the way to the checkers to take the second moto win.

Round 2 of the 2014 Yamaha Quad X series was a good one. We visited a new venue and I really liked how technical and “jumpy” the track was. Many of the places we visit mellow out the tracks so much that they are less challenging and not as fun, so it was a breath of fresh air going to Perris Raceway. We will definitely get some longer lap times when we head to Competitive Edge in late April. Looking forward to round 3 and hopefully another win.
