The Nelson Report
Round 1 - 2/16/14
Glen Helen Raceway
Devore, CA

Round 1 of the 2014 Yamaha QuadX series was held at Glen Helen Raceway in Devore, CA. Glen Helen has been getting a facelift with the AMA National Motocross series scheduled to visit in May and the facility is looking really good. This weekend was a busy one for me as I pulled double duty, racing my SR1 in the Lucas Oil Regional series on Saturday and round one of QuadX on Sunday. The QuadX track layout was fun with some different corners than usual leading up to the hills. Two of the front runners from last year were missing at round one as they plan to hit some nationals this year but we hope to see them for at least select rounds this season.

Moto 1: I had a good jump off the concrete gate and my #94 YFZ-R pulled hard thru all 5 gears to get me to the Talladega turn with the holeshot. Tanner Gemperle and Robbie Mitchell slotted in to 2nd and 3rd. Gemperle applied lots of pressure for the first lap while I tried to ride smooth and fast. By the second and third laps I had started to build up a small gap and really started to figure out my lines. Mitchell began to charge up and battle for second with Gemperle at the halfway point in the moto. As those two battled, my lead grew even bigger with clear sailing out front. After a hard battle with Mitchell, Gemperle had to pull off with a mechanical issue, handing over the 3rd spot to Colt Brinkerhoff. For the last two laps I cruised and crossed the line with an 8 second gap over Mitchell in 2nd and Brinkerhoff in 3rd.

Moto 2: I felt a little late on the gate drop for the second moto but my YFZ-R bailed me out as Gemperle and I drag raced down the long start. I had the inside line leading into turn one and came out with the second moto holeshot and $250 from GYTR and Yamalube. Gemperle was very aggressive in the first lap, staying right on my grab bar and trying to make a move. The track was quite a bit more torn- up and rutted in the second moto; I think it fit my style more than his as I began pulling a bigger gap sooner than I had in the first moto. Just like the first moto, Mitchell came charging around the halfway mark and would make the pass on Gemperle with about 3 laps to go. Gemperle would have no problems this time though and the running order held all the way to the finish with me taking the win, followed by Mitchell and Gemperle.

Round 1 of the 2014 Yamaha QuadX series was a good start to our season. Getting 2 holeshots and winning both motos is just about all we could ask for. I’m very excited about some new power we’ve found with Moto Xperts now doing our engines and Dubach Racing Development handling the exhaust. I’ve been dialing in some new grooving that is working great on our DWT tires and have also found some new set ups with the Walsh arms and Fox shocks we are using. Looking forward to a good year.
