Three-time defending AMA Pro ATV champion Chad Wienen raced to a third-place finish in the inaugural Daytona ATV Supercross in Florida on Tuesday, March 10. Held on the same dirt as the previous weekend’s AMA Supercross, the event was the first of its kind for ATV racing at Daytona International Speedway. After qualifying second, Wienen was involved in a first-turn pileup in his heat and had to race the LCQ to qualify for the main event, which he fortunately won. Even so, Wienen’s trip to the LCQ gave him one of the last gate picks for the main.

When the gate finally dropped for the 15-lap final, Wienen made a top-five start, then quickly set the race’s fastest lap in his pursuit of the leaders. He climbed to fourth on the second lap, and then into third just before the halfway point. With rivals John Natalie and Joel Hetrick battling for the lead just ahead, Wienen raced his YFZ450R to the max, but the leading trio of riders were by this point almost equal in lap times. At the checkers, the order was Natalie in front of Hetrick, and Wienen just 2.8 seconds back in third.

“I definitely made it hard on myself and had to come from behind pretty much all day – I just didn’t have great starts,” Wienen said. “I’m not really happy with today but that’s racing. We’ll keep fighting and come back strong.” The next round is set for Saturday and Sunday, March 21-22 at Echeconnee MX in Lizella, GA.
