AMA Supercross February 2, 2013 | Anaheim, CA Results

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Justin Brayton and Josh Grant raced to a 1-2 sweep of the second heat race in the premier 450 class. Brayton then went on to grab the holeshot in the 20-lap 450 main event before another rider tagged him on the first lap, sending him to the ground. By the end of the race though, the YZ450F rider had recovered to finish 10th.

In the premier class, Grant was third fastest in qualifying practice, just behind defending series champ Ryan Villopoto and ahead of current points leader Davi Millsaps, with Brayton back in ninth. Then came the magic of the second heat race, where Grant got the early advantage over a stacked field, leading Brayton and the rest of the pack for six of the eight laps. Ultimately though, Brayton took control on the white-flag lap and led Grant and the pack to the finish. Charged up, the Yamaha pair looked the strongest they have all season for the main event, but the first-lap pileup relegated Brayton to last place. Amazingly, he picked up the pace and passed half the field to grab a hard-earned top-10 finish – and the valuable points that go with it. For his part, Grant ran as high as ninth before ultimately dropping out. Great effort all!

Aboard his Star Racing YZ250F, Kyle Cunningham scored a season-best fourth-place finish in the 15-lap 250-class finale at the third and last 2013 Anaheim Supercross event at Angel Stadium in Southern California on Saturday night, Feb. 2.

A veteran of the 250 class aboard his YZ250F, Cunningham was sixth-fastest in afternoon qualifying, followed by fellow Yamaha pilot Travis Baker, riding for Valli Motorsports, in eighth. Cunningham translated that speed into a top-five finish in the first heat race while Baker finished a solid sixth in the second heat. When the gate dropped for the 250 final, it was Baker who pulled out a terrific start, holding down fourth place for the first four laps of the event before being passed by rival Eli Tomac. Meanwhile, Cunningham started just inside the top 10 before beginning to pick his way through traffic. By the halfway point both riders were inside the top six, with Cunningham up to fifth and just ahead of Baker. Cunningham soon advanced into fourth place, which he held to the finish, with Baker two spots back in sixth.
